Tour of Northern Bari

Giovinazzo, Trani,
Castel del Monte

‹ Indietro

For those lucky enough to spend a few days in Puglia it is mandatory to stop in a city where the sun is reflected on the sea and where you can enjoy a good ice cream sitting on one of those benches near the port.
Just 20 minutes by car from the Nicolaus Hotel you can see a small town with strong Renaissance and medieval walls: Giovinazzo, with its small port has the appearance of a real village.
You are immediately fascinated by the churches with the dome shaped like a trullo: the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Cathedral of Giovinazzo, located in the historic center of the city: admission is free and still take place here the most important sacred rites in city.
The small port, full of colorful boats, is populated by fishermen and traders early in the morning and not to be conquered by the oratory of those men who sell fish with the same tenacity and the same security of a jeweler who sells gold .

Leaving Giovinazzo and its good ice cream behind, we meet the romantic Trani in just 25 minutes.
Known for the famous 'stone of Trani' and its spectacular harbor.
The port of Trani is a point of reference for many young people who find themselves on Sunday afternoons, sipping a good coffee in one of those characteristic bars that you find walking along the waterfront, leaving you so enchanted by the city's cathedral that, with a pinch of fantasy, it seems to float on the sea.
Trani Cathedral is a marvelous example of Romanesque architecture, it was built using Trani stone of a very light pink color and although admission to the Cathedral is free, reservations are required for groups composed of a large number of participants. 'high turnout of visitors to the Cathedral of Trani, so commonly called.
Not far from the Cathedral, there is an important cornerstone of the castle system of Frederick II, and it is the Swabian Castle whose entrance is represented by the tower with the clock subjected to numerous restoration works. The castle is open to the public every day upon purchase of a ticket at a cost of € 3.00 per person.
At nightfall, the city shines with its own light and is now an aperitif on one of the most beautiful terraces of the city: the restaurant "Le Lampare al Fortino", an icon of this city.

We continue our journey and continue towards a guided tour of the most famous work created by Frederick II in Puglia: The Castel del Monte, about 30 minutes from Trani.
The castle has an octagonal plan, is divided into two floors and the communication between the two floors is ensured by the presence of spiral staircases. The decorations of the building are inspired by Romanesque elements marked by keystones and mythological figures.
This place hosts numerous exhibitions and events, which is why the price of admission tickets varies.
The castle is the meeting place of many families, explorers, sports and nature lovers. A Sunday at the Castle is a day dedicated to themselves, far from the routine and the city smog. The desire to relax, to spread a cloth and to read a book in the shadow of one of the eight columns of the castle.
At its feet there are various taverns and taverns with external courtyards and gardens so you can enjoy good food, typical of the North of Bari tradition without losing sight of the landscape below.
Apulia is an immense region, with territories still little known and appreciated but a good guide and a great desire to travel will help :)
Good tour to everyone!
